Ra Twisty (Ra-100-T) is single CR123 battery size based, multi light level, premium quality LED flashlight. Ra Twisty uses Seoul SSC P4 LED as a illumination source for bright light output. Reflector used for Ra Twisty is built from solid aluminium and has LOP finish. Ra Twisty has three brightness settings which are achieved by twisting the battery compartment. Ra Twisty uses advanced electronic Microcontroller (µC) based drive circuit. The Microcontroller (µC) regulates the light output and controls the light output based on the state of twist switch, condition of battery and temperature of SSC P4 LED. Ra Twisty is built from aerospace Aluminium alloy anodized with military spec type III hard coat. Hard coat anodizing provides protective coating over the aluminium alloy body and protects the light from wear and tear. Overall construction of Ra Twisty is extremely strong with thick body walls. Inside Ra Twisty, both battery contacts are spring loaded and have triple point brass contacts ensuring excellent connectivity. O-Ring seals are installed at various places for waterproofing. The lens of Ra Twisty is ultra clear glass type with anti-reflective coating. Overall build quality of Ra Twisty is superb. Ra Twisty comes in simple zip lock packaging. Light Operation & Output:
Light Operation: Twist switch. For Switching ON / OFF twist the battery compartment clockwise or anti clockwise direction. Changing brightness levels is achieved by further twisting the battery compartment. Light operation is fairly simple, twist the battery compartment and light switches on on Low light level, twist a little further, light enters in medium light level and finally twisting it completely locks light in full high brightness mode. Please note that you should not over tighten, the twist switch may get damaged. when you twist in anti clockwise direction, the levels start decreasing from high to medium and from medium to low.

Below is the chart showing total output levels* for Duracell CR123 and AW RCR123 battery. The total light output matches fairly with the manufacturer specified values.

Reflector Comparison: On left is NiteCore Extreme, in center is Ra Twisty and on right is the NovaTac 120 T. The reflector diameter is about same as that of NovaTac 120 T but smaller than NiteCore Extreme.

Reflector & LED: Ra Twisty has LOP reflector built from solid aluminium. Advantage of LOP is it offers smoother beam pattern. It also compensates for minor misalignments of LED as is the case with this particular sample of Ra-100-T. Beam pattern generated by the combination of Seoul SSC P4 LED and LOP reflector in Ra Twisty is a very well balanced throw and side spill. The transition from beam hotspot to corona and side spill is smooth.

Here is a close look at LED placement. The LED appears to be very slightly off center. Interestingly, the way in which LED is placed off center actually adds kind of additional protection to the gold bond wires that connect LED die to the LED terminals. Note that Ra Lights limit maximum off-centerness to less than 10% of the cross-sectional distance generating light and there is no significant affect on the final beam pattern as a result.

Bezel: The bezel ring of Ra Twisty is built from stainless steel and has brushed metal look. The bezel is crenellated. There are six crenellations with blunt edges. Blunt edges prevent tearing off of pockets when light is carried without a hoister in pockets. Also, the crenellations are help in determining the state of flashlight when the light is kept bezel down. For instance, if the flashlight is switched on accidentally and placed in bezel down position over a flat surface, the light escaping out of crenellations will notify and alert user. This prevents accidental depletion of battery.

Body: Ra Twisty is built from aerospace aluminium, has black color military spec type III hard coat anodizing for excellent protection from wear and tear. The built quality of Ra Twisty is exceptional.

Almost completely, Ra Twisty is covered with diamond machined knurling which provides excellent grip. The knurling gives Ra Twisty a very pleasing looks. Tail cap section has means of attaching lanyard. Overall the construction of Ra Twisty is extremely strong.

At the tail end of flashlight, there is a metal disk. Notice the thickness of tail cap walls.

Components: Ra Twisty consists of two components, head and the battery tube. Head houses AR glass lens, LED, reflector, electronics and special 3 state switch where as battery tube accommodates single CR123.

Side view of Ra Twisty Components. You will notice that on both battery tube and head, triple point metal coated brass contact disks are placed. This ensures a very reliable battery contact.

Head: Here is a more detailed look at head of Ra Twisty. Head is where most action occurs. Firstly, it has a stainless steel bezel with ultra clear AR coated glass lens. Secondly, the reflector is solid aluminium with LOP finish and SSC P4 LED as illumination source. Thirdly and most importantly the electronics, completely potted, intelligent and Microcontroller (µC) based for regulated light output at all light levels. Lastly the unique 3 state twisty switch. Overall construction of head is rugged, it is designed to take rough use with ease. For instance, stainless steel bezel handles all the falls with an ease and O-ring inside acts as a cushion to protect glass lens from shattering as well as it acts as a water proofing seal.

Head in deed acts as a brain of flashlight, a Microcontroller (µC) based brain that is. With the help of electronic circuitry, the Microcontroller (µC) constantly monitors 3 primary factors; namely the Current supplied to the LED, temperature of the LED and the state of battery i.e. battery condition. As an example, when light is on max, in case if temperature of the LED exceeds the safe limits, Microcontroller (µC) immediately reduces current supply to LED at a lower level allowing LED to cool down. Similarly, when light is on max and battery starts depleting and no longer able to supply the desired power level, Microcontroller (µC) then automatically steps down the light output to ensure continued light operation at a lower but regulated light level.

Another interesting part is when you insert battery, each time you put a new battery with a different chemistry, the Microcontroller (µC) runs a routine to detect battery type based on advanced battery detection algorithm. Based on the detected battery, it switches mode of operation from boost mode to buck mode and vice versa. If a rechargeable RCR123 battery is inserted, the Microcontroller (µC) memorizes this fact and ensures that battery does not get depleted beyond a certain voltage threshold to protect the battery over discharge.

Battery Tube: As mentioned earlier, almost entire body of Ra Twisty is covered with beautifully machined diamond knurling to offer very good grip.

Here is a 360 View of Battery tube. The inner diameter of battery tube is sufficient so that there is no rattle of batteries and yet enough space is there for free movement.

Threads Ra Twisty battery tube are not anodized and they take active part in completing the electrical circuit. There's a O-Ring sitting behind the threads.

AW RCR123: The runtime for Ra Twisty with AW RCR123 battery on MAX light output is about 1 Hour 20 Minutes to 50%. The first drop from approximately 110 Lumens to 55 Lumens occurs at 54 Minutes. After the first drop, light starts to flash once every Minute indicating depleted battery and serving as a low battery warning.
