  Introduction:
LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E is a small sized programmable LED flashlight. This light is one of the 4 models of LiteFlux Beacon Serials flashlights Series from LiteFlux. LF2 Cree XR-E supports multiple types of AAA Batteries ranging from Alkaline AAA battery to rechargeable 10440 Li-Ion battery. LiteFlux LF2 is built from aircraft grade aluminium. It has hard anodizing type 3 coating offering good environmental protection, corrosion resistance and durability. LF2 has O-Ring Seals at different locations such as between bezel and lens and between battery tube bezel which provide a good water resistance. LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E has a specially designed unique 2 stage twist switch. With Seoul Semiconductor P4 power LED as solid state light source, LiteFlux LF2 is one of the brightest lights in its category especially when powered by 10440 Li-Ion battery. LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E has advanced drive circuit, with programmable Microcontroller (µC) offering great flexibility in operation and programming options. LiteFlux LF2 ships in beautifully packaged wooden gift box.

(Note: Since this light is very similar to LiteFlux LF2 SSC P4, the review is almost a copy. However, differences between the LF2 SSC P4 and LF2 Cree XR-E Versions have been highlighted here.)

Light Operation & Output:
Basic Light Operation: Simple, Twist the tail cap 1/4th turn anticlockwise to turn on the light in low mode, twist more anticlockwise to enter high output mode. To turn off the LF2, simply turn the tail cap clockwise fully. For advanced operation, please refer to the user manual.

In-Depth Review & Pictures:
Package: LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E comes in a very beautiful wooden box with chamfered top edges. The company logo and name is laser etched on wood. The box has label identifying the product inside. If you are planning to gift this light, the box comes very handy.


Inside the box, you will find LiteFlux LF2 Flashlight, 3 Spare O-Rings, Candle Mode diffuser, lube jelly (silicone based) in small container. It is very thoughtful of LiteFlux to include the silicone lubricant.



Size Comparison: Pictured below is the complete LiteFlux Beacon Serials Family. From L to R: LF4 SSC (CR2 battery), LF2 SSC (AAA Battery), LF3 SSC (CR123 battery), LF2 Cree (AAA Battery), LF5 SSC (AA Battery).

From L to R: LF2 SSC P4, LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E. The length LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E is slightly more than compared to LF2 SSC P4. This is due to the fact that the LF2 houses XR-E LED and has a deeper reflector.

Bezel: Reflector in LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E is built from solid Aluminium. The reflector has Fine Light Orange Peel (LOP) Finish. Cree XR-E LED is perfectly aligned and centered within reflector. LOP Reflector allows for a very smooth beam transition from Spot to Spill beam. Also, the LOP reflector removes any artifacts that might come due to LED or other defects.

Reflector Comparison: The texture on reflector is more fine as compared with LF2 SSC P4 reflector's texture. Also, the Reflector depth on LF2 SSC Cree XR-E is more as compared to LF2 SSC P4. This allows the beam to be shaped for more throw.


The Glass Lens of LiteFlux LF2 is AR Coated, you can hardly see it in front of the bezel. To ensure that dirt and water does not enter the light from bezel, there is a o-ring seal between glass lens and the bezel body protecting LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E.



Body: LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E is machined from Aircraft Grade Aluminium. The Machining is very nice and is without any flaws. The body is sand blasted and has hard anodizing type III for wear and corrosion resistance. The body of LiteFlux LF2 mainly consists of 3 parts, removable bezel (housing lens and reflector), head housing Electronics and LED, battery tube. The head has grooves machined allowing easy twisting operation. The battery tube has machined slots allowing means of attachment either to key chain or to lanyard. There is a laser engraved dot on bezel determining the current position. This helps a lot when you need to know that you have to turn about 1/4 turn anti clockwise to turn on the light in low mode.


The bezel can be removed and replaced with the included diffuser, please see candle shots and comparison matrix further below. The diffuser does the job well diffusing light almost 360 degrees.




The body walls of LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E are thick indicating strong construction.

The threads are anodized, thus preventing wear and tear during operation. O-Ring placed behind threads on battery tube offers good water resistance.


Beam Shots:
Beam Shots LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E: Beam with hotspot providing good throw and having good side spill. LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E beam is configured for medium distance throw and general illumination. The overall beam quality for LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E is excellent. The beam shots below are taken with exposure compensation -1 to +2.

Exposure Compensation: -1 showing main hotspot you might notice that the hotspot is smaller as compared to LF2 SSC P4. A size by side comparison follows after these beam shots.

LF2 SSC P4 (Left) vs LF2 Cree XR-E (Right) Beam Comparison: Exposure Compensation: -1. The hotspot of LF2 Cree XR-E is well defined and more bright as compared to softer hotspot of LF2 SSC P4. You might also notice that the side spill is also distinctly visible and again well defined.

LF2 SSC P4 and LF2 Cree XR-E Comparative beam shots Conclusion. As you can see from the above Beam shot comparisons, the LiteFlux LF2 SSC P4 has wide hotspot and very smoothly merging side spill where as the LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E version has more distinct brighter hotspot and equally distinct side spill. LF2 SSC P4 is more suited for general purpose closeup work illumination. LF2 Cree-XR E is more suited for medium distance illumination due to brighter hotspot and longer throw.
Candle Shots:
Below is the Candle Shots Matrix showing LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E on Right and a real candle on Left. The Candle flame glow and Diffuser over LED have same height and are placed at about same distance from the wall. To better understand how they compare notice background on the wall. For instance, if you see the first left image, you would see that the candle has almost equal amount of light throwing on the wall as compared to LF2 Cree. Where as in second image, you wall notice that there is a considerable change, the LF2 Cree throws much more light on the wall as compared to the candle. This fact is more aggravated when shots are taken at different exposure compensation levels.

LF2 SSC P4 and LF2 Cree XR-E Comparative Candle Shots on High: The XR-E version of LF2 does have a very slight edge in terms of total output as can be seen from the following comparison matrix.

Extreme Closeup Pictures: LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E
Here are a few extreme closeup shots. Since this light looks very similar to LF2 SSC P4, here are the pictures of LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E from a different angle (slightly rotated) to highlight other side of LF2 Cree XR-E. Head showing grooves for firm grip.


Dot location marker can be seen as well as the flat side and side groove carved. This provides very good grip for holding on battery tube.

Runtime:
Here is the runtime chart for LiteFlux LF2 Cree XR-E. The runtime test was carried out with 2 battery types.

Alkaline 1:
Energizer Max Alkaline battery was used to determine how it works with depleted battery. LF2 Cree XR-E Performed fairly well with about 30 Minutes till 50%. But that's not all! Please have a look at LiteFlux LF2 SSC P4's Runtime tests. The Alkaline battery in practical use will last far more than 30 Minutes.

NiMH: La Crosse 700 mAh NiMH AAA battery was used do this runtime test. The battery was charged fully and given rest for 2 Hours to settle down. The runtime of LF2 Cree XR-E on NiMH was found to be good with about 54 Minutes till 50%.
